History: 2007

The year 2007 was a big year in the development and further expansion of the NSS. 2007 saw the departure of Christine Matthews and the resignation of Christopher Benjamin from the position of president. Despite these losses, the NSS continued to move forward through a new leadership group led by President Domenic Dwyer.

The weekly seminar series continued to thrive. Of particular note were those presentations by Dr.'s Stephen Bowden, Michael Saling and Sarah Wilson which formed part of a series examining the practice and methodology of clinical neuropsychology in Australia.

In addition, the inaugural NSS "Beers 'n' Brains" Pub Discussion took place in June of 2007, and we were very pleased to host Dr. Kevin Walsh as our guest of honour. Those who were in attendance will recall that the evening was a great success! Dr. Walsh discussed the origins of clinical neuropsychology in Melbourne, his own personal experiences as a pioneer of the field, and interesting aspects of cases he has seen. I think we all enjoyed the unique opportunity to engage with such an influential contributor to our field over drinks and dinner in the relaxed, casual atmosphere of Birra Bella pub. It was also a great chance to mingle with fellow postgrads from different universities.

In September 2007 Dr David Darby presented an interactive discussion which highlighted important principles in identifying clinically relevent symptoms during neuropsychological assessment. This was a great seminar as Dr Darby was able to provide actual video footage of various clinical presentations which proved invaluable for those budding, and not so budding neuropsychologists who attended from various universities.

2007 ended with our Christmas Party which allowed us all to socialise and let our hair down and unwind. Attended by both students and teachers, this provided a great atmosphere to reflect on another year studying neuropsychology and prepare for the next year to come!
