The NSS Presents:
Winston J. Lindsley
A Stroke Survivor's Innovation: Video-Assisted Speech Technology (VAST)
In 2002, Winston Lindsley suffered a left hemispheric stroke which left him
with nonfluent aphasia and oral apraxia. Since his stroke he has been using
a variety of therapies and technologies to improve his ability to communicate.
He has also developed a website containing a variety of resources for others with
aphasia and travels internationally from his home in the United States to share his
success story and disseminate information about useful therapeutic strategies.
The VAST technique was pioneered by Winston at the Stroke Comeback Center
in Oakton, Virginia. VAST is a unique technological innovation which allows
individuals with apraxia and nonfluent aphasia to use pre-recorded oral movements
to help them communicate. It has been used successfully by members of the Center as
well as other individuals attempting the technique for the first time. Further
information can be found at www.speakinmotion.com
