The NSS is an independent, student-run society operating out of the University
of Melbourne. We have three broad aims: 1) to provide members with a regular forum
for professional and academic development, 2) to foster discussion of broader
philosophical and practical issues within the field of neuropsychology, and 3)
to promote socialising and networking amongst members across Melbourne.
The independence of the NSS is perhaps our most defining and valued characteristic.
The society does not endorse any particular model of neuropsychological research or practice,
and operates under the assumption that its members are independent, intelligent,
and highly skilled thinkers capable of critically appraising all information received in
professional development forums. As such, the NSS committee
has always worked with the best intentions to invite speakers from a wide variety of backgrounds
and models of practice. We often source our speakers from people we meet as we navigate our training.
We thank all those people who have supported us in the past. The NSS welcomes any feedback regarding this
and please feel free to contact us if you would like the opportunity to present to our members.
Our activities generally target an audience of clinical neuropsychology postgraduates,
but membership is open to all interested parties and is currently comprised of a wide
variety of individuals from institutions across Melbourne including undergraduates,
postgraduates, early-career clinicians, academic staff, and other scientists. Please
contact us if you would like to join the society. We recognize that students are often
working on a tight budget, and are proud to offer free membership as well as free entry
to the majority of the events we sponsor.
The value and potential of the NSS is hard to emphasise enough. Consider what
makes your experience at university a good one: the staff, course structure,
and course content are all critical, but so too is your involvement in an
intelligent, friendly, and supportive network of peers. This latter component
depends on your own efforts, and is easy to neglect as the pressures of study mount.
It is important to remember that the relationships we form while at university keep
us shy of DSM diagnoses as we tackle our theses, help us to laugh (or cry) our way
through course-related difficulties, and provide us with invaluable contacts both
within Australia and abroad. Taking personal responsibility for learning and
contributing to the development of one's profession are also integral parts of the
postgraduate experience, and the NSS works to actively promote these ends.
The program of activities organised by the NSS each year includes weekly
lunchtime seminars held in the Department of Psychology at the University of
Melbourne, evening professional development events held in larger venues at
the University of Melbourne, and evening social events held in more central
locations. The formats of our PD events range from practical skills workshops
through to didactic lectures. We advertise upcoming events and distribute
relevant reference material via a fortnightly newsletter and on our website.
You can also peruse the website for detailed parking information, maps, photos
from past events, copies of slides, helpful references, and a variety of other
useful resources.
We hope to see you at upcoming NSS events! If you would like to join the society,
become involved with the committee, or just want further information, please
contact us at the email address below. We also welcome any feedback you may
have in order to help us develop an informative and relevant program of
activities. Given our status as an independent society, we are free to evolve as
required to meet the needs of our members.
